These days when one talks of High School football camps one is really talking about two things. The first is a way for high school students to evaluate a program and a campus to see if it is a good fit for them. A relatively new trend in high school football camps are the elite camps such as the Nike Football camps. These are camps in which elite players are invited to attend at no cost to the players. These camps have become almost mini all star camps and have become an important tool in high caliber athletes show casing their skills. Times and skills are well reported and documented and can help boost both the numbers and quality of scholarship offers that athletes may receive.

Finally, what do these camps offer for the college coaches? Well, number one it is a way to get potential recruits onto campus in a football setting. These camps allow coaches to get to know the players more personally and to understand how potential players personalities and work ethics fit into their programs. Secondly, it allows coaches a chance to measure player’s skills against other players of similar size and speed. This is especially helpful when recruiting players from smaller schools who have not experience the level of competition that coaches can simulate in camps.

Durban Olympics 2020 – The other cities that are bidding to host the Summer Olympics 2020.

Durban is now the only city in South Africa that will formally bid to host to the Summer Olympic Games in 2020 after Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth failed to submit their application to SASCOC. On September 7th 2010, SASCOC announced that it considered South Africa’s 2020 Olympic bid finalised with Durban as the host city, and now it was up to the South African government to ensure that Durban’s Olympic bid for the 2020 Olympic Games goes ahead. This should be no problem as Jacob Zuma, the President of South Africa, is a firm supporter of Durban as the host city and after the huge success of the 2010 World Cup Football, Durban proved it can host a major international sporting event with no problems.

Durban is up against some big competition to host the 2020 Olympic Games, but the climate of the city during June / July and the excellent sports venues are a huge advantage for Durban. The fact that the IOC is having it’s conference there in 2011 is a huge bonus and will allow the decision makers to see first hand that Durban would be the perfect choice as the host city of the Olympic Games in 2020.

Working in Durban’s favour to host the 2020 Olympic Games is that the IOC has expressed the desire to have the games in a developing country, and the fact that the Olympics has never been on African soil will also mean that Durban will be the favourite city, as it’s only other competitor will be Rabat in Morocco.

In fact, Mafki, the French horse ridden by jockey Soumillon and trained by Detzangles was touted by many as the most likely to win. Three months earlier, this year, Mafki let down punters at the Royal Ascot.

It was deja vu as Mafki finished a poor fifth, behind Poet’s Voice, Rip Van Winkle, Red Jazz and Beethoven.

The early pace was set by Air Chief Marshal, Van Winkle’s stable mate. Leading for about six furlongs, Air chief Marshal could not sustain the pace, after the turn.

Poet’s Voice only challenged the leader Van Winkle in the last 100 metres, just about the time Murtagh’s horse took charge. Dettori kept his horse steady till the turn.

In fact, with about a furlong to go, Poet’s Voice was in third place. Red Jazz stayed closest to Rip Van Winkle, even as Johnny Murtagh astride the leader began to build on his lead.

Apart from Van Winkle, trainer O’Brien had another of his trainees in the race, in Beethoven.

Jockey Dettori had a great day, riding four winners in all, including White Moonstone, the horse he rode to victory in the Group 1 fillies mile.

Fourteen years ago, Dettori had the greatest day of his career going through the card when he rode all the seven winners on the same day, at this venue.

In fact, there’s a statue of the jockey at Ascot, a fact that he reminded reporters who thronged to congratulate him.

In fact, White Moonstone’s win achieved a Group 1 double on the afternoon for trainer Bin Suroor and owner Godolphin, as well.

NBA Picks previews the 2010-11 National Basketball Association season for the Philadelphia 76ers, who have pretty much no where to go but up this season.

The 76ers finished with a dismal 27-55 SU record last season, second-last in the Atlantic division (just ahead of NBA doormat New Jersey Nets) and third-last in the Eastern Conference.

Key personnel and players who won’t be around this season include former head coach Eddie Jordan, who was fired the day after the 76ers’ season ended, and players Samuel Dalembert and Rodney Carney.

Some new additions this season include head coach Doug Collins, and players Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes and Andres Nocioni. Turner was Philadelphia’s No. 2-overall selection at the NBA Draft, while the latter two were acquired in a trade with the Sacramento Kings that sent Dalembert the other way.

As well, Rod Thorn has been named team president, and while general manager Ed Stefanski remains with the team, Thorn is now the de-facto GM.

Philadelphia’s defensive efficiency rating was 24th in the NBA last season but that should improve in 2010-11 with Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala at point guard and small forward, respectively.

And while just a rookie, Turner should pay immediate dividends on defense, as he has the size to defend two-guards, and will likely draw the third defensive assignment behind Iguodala and Jrue, giving the 76ers three slightly-above average perimeter defenders.

Among the team’s weaknesses are three-point shooting and defensive rebounding, with Philadelphia ranking near the bottom of the NBA in three-point efficiency. Half-court scoring has also been a problem since Allen Iverson left and that will likely continue this season.
