These days when one talks of High School football camps one is really talking about two things. The first is a way for high school students to evaluate a program and a campus to see if it is a good fit for them. The second is that these camps are becoming a very important recruiting tool for college coaches and gives colleges a chance to much more thoroughly evaluate both skills and character of potential recruits.
One of the main considerations prior to attending a football camp is how to pay for them. That’s why many camps organize Football Fundraisers to help players pay their way. Other leagues and schools that sponsor camps pay for them by using some money raised with football fundraising campaigns.
How does a young kid decide on which camp to attend? Firstly, the student must decide in his mind, is this some place that I could see myself actually attending. For instance why would one want to attend a camp at a university that did not offer the major that one is most interested in? Secondly, the player should talk with others who have attended the camp and get feedback on how the camp was run. Were all kids offered the same opportunities to show their skills? Were all players treated equally? Did the coaches run well organized practices which seemed to have a purpose? Was player safety emphasized by the coaching staff? What were the facilities like? How much does the camp costs and what are the payment terms? Many of these items are concerns of both the players and their parents.
A relatively new trend in high school football camps are the elite camps such as the Nike Football camps. These are camps in which elite players are invited to attend at no cost to the players. These camps have become almost mini all star camps and have become an important tool in high caliber athletes show casing their skills. Times and skills are well reported and documented and can help boost both the numbers and quality of scholarship offers that athletes may receive.
Finally, what do these camps offer for the college coaches? Well, number one it is a way to get potential recruits onto campus in a football setting. These camps allow coaches to get to know the players more personally and to understand how potential players personalities and work ethics fit into their programs. Secondly, it allows coaches a chance to measure player’s skills against other players of similar size and speed. This is especially helpful when recruiting players from smaller schools who have not experience the level of competition that coaches can simulate in camps.
